Bit locker Drive Encryption

Windows 10 Bit locker Drive Encryption (Windows Pc’s ONLY)

May 2018

R Brown (Staff)

If you are using a mac at home this is NOT, the guide for you this process only works on windows pcs

As you know in 2015 we included a detailed guide in the staff handbook section 7 (ICT Matters) based on windows 7 and drive encryption.

As we are now on windows 10 and the GDPR regulations come into effect on the 25th of May 2018 I have written an updated guide based on windows 10.

Should you have any questions or concerns please email ithelpdesk@Cardiffhigh.cardiff.sch.uk and we will do our best to assist you.

** Please note **

Once you have chosen your password and have encrypted the drive we are NOT able to retrieve this password! If you forget it the data on the drive cannot be retrieved without the recovery key.

We strongly suggest you only carry required data with you. Things you don’t rely upon heavily can be uploaded to your cloud drive (Non sensitive only)

  • 1.       When you insert a usb storage device (Pen Drive, External Hard Disk / SSD etc)

You will see (After the 25h of May)

If you are using the device read only I.e You have made resources at home to use in school, then you can simply click on “Don’t encrypt this drive” * Please note you will not be able to “Record” (save) any data onto the device in school in this mode (Non Encrypted)

If you however wish to use the device to read and write, then please choose the “Encrypt this drive using Bit Locker Drive Encryption”

When you click this you will then see:

Please choose a suitable password which is not easily guessed and is something you will remember!

After entering the password twice and clicking next you will see the following:

we would strongly recommend saving the file to your network drive and also sending yourself an email with it attached as once again if this is lost you will not be able to recover what is on the device

If you have chosen, the option to save the key you will see the following screen after clicking next

Choose the location you want to save the recovery key (Do not save it to the USB!) then click on save.

After this you will then see the following:

Go with the Compatible option as highlighted as this will work with previous versions of windows then click next.

You will then see the following:

Once you are ready to go please click on the “Start Encrypting button” and then the process will begin.

Please leave this doing its job and after a period of time the process should complete.

When the process has completed successfully then you will have a secured usb device. The next time you plug the usb drive in you will be prompted for the password to “Unlock” the drive.

Such as below.

You can also opt for your password to be saved on your account profile or recover the password by using the recovery key you created and saved.
