ICT Asset Disposal Policy

ICT Asset Disposal policy

In school as we are dealing with public funds we need to ensure that we make the most of our assets and keep them working for as long as possible. When it is time to dispose of an item we will do it properly. We assess the cost of repairs vs the cost of replacement vs the anticipated lifespan after repair.

By looking at these factors we decide if to make a repair or not, When the decision is taken to remove an item from service and dispose of it we format the Hard Disk (Pc or Laptop) strip any working components from the computer such as Battery pack, screen (laptops only), Memory or Disk drives. The remaining parts of the computer are stored until we have enough end of life items then we arrange a weee waste collection from a licenced carrier.

Cardiff high school since 2014 have used PRM GreenTech as our licensed Weee processor.

Their Weee Licence is: CBDU54597

Any Items which contain a Hard Disk such as pc’s or laptops are stripped of the Hard Disk, then data destroyed to a standard of CESG Infosec Level 5 approved standards and documented

The data destruction certificate is sent to us and a copy remains with PRM greentech

These files are saved to the ICT Team Drive on Google Docs and the information is shared with the Estates Manager, Business Manager and Headteacher, As Well as the ICT Support Team.

Prior to assets being written off the Network Manager informs the HeadTeacher and we discuss the options such as viability of repair or disposal. Once agreement is given collection is arranged. At times if we no longer require items which are still functional we offer them to local schools after seeing if they can be used internally by another department.
